5 NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR FISHERMEN
New Year, New You.
Wow! Another year already in the books? If you’re like us, you’re asking yourself how another year has already come and gone. As we review the last 365 days in our minds and our Facebook feeds, we often think about last year's resolutions and if we stuck to them. Most likely we kept them for the first month, or maybe we even kept them for the first half of the year, but then by fall we eventually taper back into our old habits. With the new year on the horizon, we can once again set new goals to better ourselves. Each new year brings new opportunities. Sometimes that’s a fresh start and trying new things.
Are you looking for a way to paddle into new waters this year?
We are too.
We know, we know New Year's resolutions are seen as a bit of a joke, but they can also be incredibly beneficial. Since New Year's resolutions are hard, we got your back. We put together a list of a few New Year’s resolutions to make 2019 your year for fishing.
Have you thought about branching out into new waters or even a new species? What about trying new fishing knots or completely changing up your technique?
These may sound simple, but if we’ve learned anything over the years, it’s that we are creatures of habit. We have our fishing spots, our lucky fishing lures and our must-have brands. Habits can be hard to break. But it’s good to get outside our comfort zones every now and then. We like to think of them as short-term bucket lists. Something to challenge yourself and learn from.
Here are some great fishing ideas to try:
1. New Year. New Spot.
This one might be tough for some of you die-hard fishermen, but imagine it as expanding your water palette. Finding new spots may sound daunting because of the unspoken rule of “don’t take another fisherman’s fishing spot,” but our motto is "it’s better to ask for forgiveness than permission."
Finding a new fishing spot and learning about new habitats make you a better and more versatile fisherman. We encourage you to try and find a new fishing spot every month. Start out small and try new spots at the same lake you like to fish in or if you’re really feeling courageous try paddling into some new waters.
2. New Year. New Fish.
Maybe you’re known as the Trout Guy or King of the Bass. No matter what your fish might be, we encourage you to step outside your comfort zone and try fishing for new kinds of fish.
Pick a specific species and learn about their behavior, environment and really dissect that species. No literally. Dissect them. Learn about their anatomy. Understanding that species and becoming an expert will make you more successful at catching them.
3. New Year. New Fisherman.
You know what they say? Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Let’s feed some men. One easy and fun resolution for 2019 is to teach someone else how to fish.
Grab your nieces and nephews for the weekend and teach them a pastime that'll last a lifetime. Or make a new friend while teaching someone to fish. Teaching someone to fish not only makes their day, but it makes your day too. There’s nothing better than watching someone else fall in love with the same sport.
4. New Year. New Technique.
So, you’re good at rod and reel. And we mean really good. How about trying a new kind of technique like fly fishing or try a new style of fishing with new fishing rods, new bait, or even a new type of knot and see how that goes.
Techniques are easy to change out and find new ideas. Throw your smartphone in your tackle box with the rest of your fishing gear for on-the-go ideas. With the internet accessible virtually anywhere, you can discover as many new ideas and techniques as you want.
5. New Year. New Event.
Make 2019 your year to challenge yourself. Get out of your comfort zone and attend a fishing event. Being in a
